How to give a great best man's speech, part 2

Or, how I held the flowers at a wedding and survived!

I've been best man 9 times. While I remember each of these weddings quite vividly, the time I remember most at a wedding (besides my own!) was when I was "man-of-honor" at my friend Devon's wedding.

Devon, a friend from college, had been dating her boyfriend, Sean, for a couple of years, when they decided to get married. They wanted a destination wedding, and chose St. Johns in the Virgin Islands. Devon invited a whole bunch of us from college, but I was the only one who can go. As a result, I got to be her "man-of'-honor". I held the flowers at the wedding.

What I did for my toast was a little unique: My parents had had their honeymoon on St. Thomas, and I went to the synagogue there, and wrote Devon's toast on the spot where my parents had sat the first Friday night of their marriage. (They did something right, as they are about to celebrate their 50th anniversary!) I wrote about the hopes and dreams they must have had, and tied it in to the hopes and dreams that Devon and Sean shared.

The moral of the story is this: If you're stuck on something to say, try to link back to something in your past (or history), and tie it together. People love that sort of stuff!

Hope this helps you; more stories to follow.
